Programme: Academic and Professional Development for PhD students
Course: PhD Writers Group
Description:

This new initiative, which is part of the Academic and Professional Development Programme, is aimed at both research staff writing for publication and PhD students who have passed their upgrade, and who perhaps now find themselves cast adrift with their doctoral theses still to write, and little formal support available to them.

The aim of the writing coaching group is to introduce research staff and PhD students into the culture of writing groups, where they will read and discuss their work with colleagues from other disciplines (to ensure a non-competitive vibe). The writing groups formed in these sessions will build a sense of fellowship, offer structure to the writing process, and create an environment of trust, in which constructive criticism may be offered and acted on.

RLF Fellow Marina Benjamin will lead the first writing coaching session inducting students into writing groups by laying down the etiquette of belonging to a writing group and also imparting the lessons professional writers have learnt about sharing and critiquing other people’s work. She will also offer practical guidelines to students about how to critique another’s person’s work”.
