Programme: Academic and Professional Development for PhD students
Course: Getting Published: Becoming an author: from proposal to publication
Description:
The process of book publishing can be intimidating for the first-time author. This half-day workshop examines how publishing works, demonstrates how to go about putting together an academic book proposal, and helps potential authors prepare to approach an editor or publisher.

This workshop is for researchers and staff who want to

  • find out how to convert research into journal articles and books
  • gain a realistic understanding of what editors and publishers are looking for
  • understand the mechanics of getting a book published commercially.

It includes practical advice on

  • identifying the right format for publication
  • putting together a book proposal
  • providing information that editors and publishers need
  • understanding and negotiating a contract

It will enable participants to understand

  • how articles and books get commissioned
  • how to approach editors and publishers
  • how editors and publishers make decisions.

One-to-one advice

Following on from the workshop, participants can book an appointment to discuss their projects individually.

Support will be given for participants to produce a short initial proposal for presentation to publishers at the panel session on 27 June. The publishers’ panel provides a unique opportunity to meet publishers from leading academic publishing houses, and discuss your book idea.
