Programme: Research Excellence Framework (REF) and Impact
Course: Introduction to the Research Excellence Framework (REF)
Description:

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the new system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.

While we don’t yet know the exact rules of the next REF, nor when this will take place, this session will
provide an overview of the essentials that we expect will make up the next REF, based on what happened
in REF2014.

The session is aimed at those who have little or no previous knowledge or experience of the
REF but who will be expected to take part in the next one, either as an academic or researcher being
submitted or a member of professional services expected to support their unit’s REF preparations. By the
end of the session you will:

  1. understand the key eligibility criteria and submission requirements for the REF
  2. be able to make a start on their own personal submission and/or contribute to their unit’s REF preparations
  3. understand the rules around ‘clearly defined’ and ‘complex’ personal circumstances.

The session will be delivered by Jo Hemmings, Research Policy Manager from the Research Division.
