Course: Unconscious Bias
Description:

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for all staff.

Overview

Unconscious bias refers to a bias that we are unaware of and which happens outside of our control. This interactive half-day session explores the way our brains process information and make shortcuts and assumptions on our behalf without us even noticing.  Delegates will look at areas which create and exacerbate those shortcuts and assumptions including our innate preferences for certain people and information, cultural environment, personal experiences and background.

In a work situation our unconscious biases can have a significant influence in a variety of situations such as; who we listen to most intently, who we disregard most easily, how good we think someone is at their job and/or how good we think someone would be at a job for which they are applying and how encouraging or discouraging our body language is towards different people.

Through group discussions and activities, delegates will delve into the existing psychological evidence of how those shortcuts and assumptions impact on our behaviour and decisions.  This will be followed by discussions on strategies and mechanisms for managing our brain’s processing and ultimately ensuring our behaviours and decisions are based on sound rationale and are not unconsciously biased.

By the end of this course you will

  • Be aware of the brain’s processing shortcuts and how that processing impacts on our behaviours and decision making
  • Understand how those shortcuts and assumptions are created and exacerbated
  • Increase our awareness of strategies to manage our brain’s shortcuts and make better decisions
