Course: Encouraging student contributions in small group teaching

Contributing during classes enables students to actively learn, and to test and develop their understanding. But this invaluable behaviour is hard to control or predict. What teaching practices promote useful student contributions? What expectations and understandings do students have? This workshop will also explore less traditional ways to enable student contributions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • Identify factors which inhibit and encourage student contribution
  • Develop environments, activities and teaching approaches which encourage student contribution
  • Identify non-traditional routes for contributions which suit the course and students
